Welcome to Romania Cycle

Thanks for visiting romaniacycle.com! I'm Alistair McDonald and a teacher at Titus Salt School in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

This summer I'll be cycling over 1300 miles to Romania to raise funds for the Christian charity, Casa Sperantei ('House of Hope') who work with underprivileged young people in rural Romania.

My solo, unsupported cycle starts from Titus Salt school on Friday 17th July and takes me through Holland, Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and into Romania. By pedalling an average of 70miles a day, I hope to arrive in North West Romania 3-4 weeks later.

The aim is to raise £7,000 to help build a new family centre for Casa Sperantei. The charity is run by my parents, Bob & Edith, and has provided educational opportunities and a safe recreational space for children and young people of several villages in the area since 2005.

As the number of young people involved at Casa Sperantei has grown, the current premises (Bob & Edith's lounge!) have proved to be too small and Casa Sperantei is now in dire need of larger, better equipped facilities.

Some of the young people involved in Casa Sperantei's work.

The new centre, in the village of Sardu, will act as focal point for the whole community; housing a dedicated space for kids’ clubs, craft workshops, literacy and numeracy classes, group sessions and an improved outside play space. As well as offering private counselling rooms the centre will also accommodate a family support service and health education information point.

The new family centre currently under construction.
